This is absolutely the last thing that the Congress party would have seen coming – a clash within the party’s city leaders that is set to upset the Congress’ hitherto unassailable Muslim vote. If the MLA of Pulakeshi Nagar A.C. Srinivas has his way, the annual Ramzan Bazaar, the colourful and eponymous all night bazaar on Mosque Road in Bengaluru that is part and parcel of the holy month of Ramadhan, looks as if it is in jeopardy, this year.
Mr Srininvas ws besieged by residents of the Mosque Road in Pulakeshi Nagar Assembly constituency who said they were deeply unhappy at the prospect of facing thirty days and nights of noise posed by the stream of people thronging the make-shift shops and eateries that come up on the road. The shops offer a variety of healthy food options to break the fast after evening prayers which also draws hundreds to the Mosque Road area.
The Congress Legislator, gave a patient hearing to the residents, and promised them he would look into the matter.
With the risks posed of alienating the minority community that backs the Congress whole-heartedly, the Shivajinagar MLA, Rizwan Arshad has stepped in, telling this reporter that he is very happy to host the Ramzan Bazaar in his constituency.
"There is more than enough place in my constituency to host this bazaar. The Ramzan Bazaar sees a huge footfall, not just from the Muslim community but also from others across the spectrum. They come to buy the special food items that is sold for Ramzaan as well as other items including affordable readymade garments and pots and pans that are sold for a song. I’m open to holding the bazaar. .Let the merchants who participate in the Ramzaan bazaar approach me, I am ready to help them in the best way without causing inconvenience to anyone".
The annual Ramzan Bazaar has been a huge attraction for several years with people drawn like magnets to the open air eateries that have become a feature of Bangalore city in Pulakeshi Nagar and neighbouring Shivajinagar through Ramzaan which is set to begin on March 10.
With Rizwan Arshad stepping in after Srinivas seemed to be inclined to throw a spanner in the works, the Congress top brass may now have some room to breathe.
