Can a king be a minister, asks Social media to Yaduveeer

2 min read

Even as the BJP high command is toying with the idea of fielding Yaduveeer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, a member of the erstwhile Wadiyar Dynasty from the prestigious Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha constituency, there are voices on social media asking him not to enter politics and maintain the dignity of his dynasty.

The Wadiyars ruled Mysore State for more than two centuries, "You must be like a king and not a minister. The people have a lot of respect for the Mysore rulers for their foresight and benevolence, and that must not be spoiled by Yaduveeer by contesting in the election. Politics is not suitable for your family. Your forefathers ruled us for many centuries. A king is always a king and must not become a minister", said one social media post.

Not surprisingly, these were sentiments were echoed by  the sitting MP Pratap Simha who may be denied the ticket this time. He is making all the right noises about how he backs the princeling but warned of the perils of dealing with India's bureaucracy.

Can a scion of Mysore royal family, break with past practice of dictating to officers, and instead, pander to them to get the job done, he asks. If elected, Yaduveeer will have to deal with the secretaries to the ministers to get even an appointment to see the ministers.

Simha has shared how people call him if the garbage is not cleared in their areas and summon him in case of any civil problem in their locality.

"Is Yaduveeer ready to be at the beck and call of ordinary people? Politics is not a bed of roses . An MP has to take part in dharnas and agitations, be ready to face criticism, " he said.

Insisting that he backed Yaduveer's candidature, he said :"If the party gives Yaduveeer the ticket to contest from Mysore-Kodagu seat, I will work for his victory. I will abide by any decision of our national leaders. I am not going to contest from any other constituency ".

But also added, "the Mysore royal family has a good reputation across the country and that needs to be protected at any cost."

Sour grapes, Mr Simha? Or is he speaking truth to power?
