Being aware of the emotional bond between the Wadiyar royal family and Mysoreans, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has asked leaders and workers of the Congress Party not to criticise Yaduveeer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, a member of the royal family and the BJP candidate for the Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha constituency.
During his two-day visit to Mysuru, the CM told party workers not to utter a single word against Yaduveeer but attack the BJP in general. Any unparliamentary language or criticsl statements on Yaduveeer would not only impact the Congress candidate of Mysuru but also in other parliamentary constituencies, he warned.
Though the maharaja’s ended several decades ago, the people of Mysuru still address Yaduveeer as 'Maharaja' and Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, wife of late Srikantadatta Narasimha Wadiyar as 'Rajmata'. Such being the respect for the Mysore royal family, no Congress leader must talk lightly of Yaduveeer, the chief minister said.
A few years ago, a video of Siddaramaiah addressing the Mysuru rulers ‘singularly’ and questioning their contributions for the development of Mysuru had gone viral. Siddaramaiah had said then that the Mysore Maharajas developed the principality using the people's money and had not spent from their own pockets. This has attracted criticism from various quarters including from his own party leaders.
The Wadiyars of Mysuru command love and respect across the state for their benevolence and vision. Even Mahatma Gandhi had described Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, the present incumbent’s ancestor as ' Rajashri ' for his concern for the poor and downtrodden.
