BJP’ s string of arrests of Opposition leaders changes poll dynamic

2 min read

This could be a wake up call for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who would see the force and fire in the Opposition's rally being held at the historic Ramleela Maidan in New Delhi on March 31 against the arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Although Modi has united the divided opposition on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections,  his own allies especially the Janata Dal(United), the Telugu Desam Party, the Janata Dal (S) have remained neutral on Kejriwal's arrest so far.

The BJP under Narendra Modi is now fighting on two fronts simultaneously.  One is the Congress. The other is the regional parties.

The use of ED,CBI,PMLA and Income Tax against political opponents is being widely seen as a  bid by the BJP to strengthen Prime Minister Modi as his welfare schemes,  administration and his theory of "double engine" government at the Centre and in states can only go this far.

Malpractices applied in the mayoral election of the Chandigarh municipal corporation, curtailing powers of the Delhi government through parliament Act, engineering splits in the Shiv Sena, the NCP in Maharashtra, the electoral bonds, recruiting leaders from rival parties in the BJP who are facing allegations of corruption--are the indicators that the BJP is not completely sure it’s on solid ground.

The buzz in Delhi’s political circles is that Kejriwal’s arrest could be followed by arrests of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray.

Sources indicate that In such a situation even the Odisha chief minister Naveen Pattnaik ,known for being soft on the BJP and the Modi dispensation, could not be seen as being friendly with the BJP.

INDIA bloc on Sunday announced that it  will hold a mega rally on March 31 at Delhi's Ramleela Maidan to protest against Arvind Kejriwal's arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 under the anti-money laundering law after searches at his official residence in the Civil Lines area of the national capital.
