Just as the political winds seemed to be blowing in the BJP's favour, the Supreme Court delivered a subtle but significant blow against it on Tuesday. After six months in jail in connection with the alleged Delhi multi-crore excise scam, AAP MP Sanjay Singh was granted bail by the top court. The apex court's decision could not have been more timely for AAP and the INDIA bloc.
Not only does this decision bolster the morale of AAP but also injects fresh momentum into the INDIA bloc's campaign efforts. Thanks to his formidable oratory skills, Sanjay Singh's presence is poised to significantly boost the Opposition's political arsenal.
The top court's move could also pave the way for the other main AAP leaders like Manish Sisodia to secure bail. Moreover, even as the BJP was desperately trying to project that Sanjay Singh got bail as the Enforcement Directorate did not oppose it, the Supreme Court categorically stated the investigating agency had failed to provide "any arguments on merit".
If other AAP leaders also manage to get bail, the BJP's much flaunted slogan -- "zero tolerance to corruption" -- could hit a hurdle. As for the AAP leaders, the view that the ED "has not yet been able to establish the money trail" could come as a relief.
Following the top court verdict, a wave of cynicism has swept through a section of the BJP functionaries. The confidence of securing victory in all the seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi seemed to be on the wane among some of the BJP leaders. They even feared that the possibility of BJP coming down by two to three seats "cannot be ruled out."
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal might still be in jail but after the Sanjay Singh verdict, the BJP strategists are meticulously analysing the potential repercussions not only in Delhi but also in the crucial Hindi heartland. The ED's relentless pursuit of the opposition leaders has not been "going down well with the middle class" and the "floating voters," a senior BJP leader observed.
It was further pointed out that the BJP's attempt to take a moral high ground on the corruption issue received a body blow after it was revealed the party was the largest beneficiary of the electoral bonds scheme. The BJP leaders were also finding it hard to defend their stand against corruption with a number of tainted opposition leaders joining the party.
"Voters are not blind", the BJP leader said. However, with the stakes higher than ever, the BJP spin doctors are trying to recalibrate their campaign strategies accordingly. With things not going their way in the excise scam, the BJP leaders have been asked to zero in on south India.
If the BJP fails to open its account in Kerala and Tamil Nadu and improve its tally in Telangana, the plan to secure 350 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats will remain just noise. Besides the south, the BJP might also find the going tough in West Bengal and Bihar.
As the BJP grappled with the developments, the AAP has stepped up its rhetoric to gain sympathy. Senior AAP leader and Delhi minister Atishi claimed Kejriwal had been losing weight since his arrest on March 21. She accused the BJP of putting his health at risk by keeping him in jail. She said AAP would seek legal help over the chief minister's health condition. However, with Sanjay Singh out on bail, he is now expected to take charge of AAP‘s affairs along with Kejriwal's wife Sunita.
There have been some murmurs of discontent in AAP regarding the apparent efforts of Atishi and fellow minister Sourabh Bharadwaj to seize the spotlight amidst the turmoil. In response, signals were sent within the party to integrate Sunita into the forefront of the political discourse, suggesting a recalibration of strategy and leadership dynamics within the organisation.
Going forward, it remains to be seen whether AAP can weather the storm, especially after the Delhi High Court, reserved its verdict on a plea moved by Kejriwal challenging his arrest by the ED.
