WHAT is the Congress' pillars of justice

3 min read

The Congress fighting with its back to the wall laid out the outlines of its poll manifesto by revealing its campaign theme of "5 Nyays." The ""5 Nyays" are supposed to be the five pillars drawn from the recently concluded Congress scion, Rahul Gandhi's, two month old Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

The five commandments which apparently emerged out of the extensive yatra from Manipur's Thoubal to Mumbai are- Kisan Nyay, Yuva Nyay, Naari Nyay, Shramik Nyay and Hissedari Nyay.

However, the main ammunition the Congress is banking on to slaughter the saffron Goliath is the 'Hissedari' or 'Bhagidari' justice(Nyay). 'Hisseddari Nyay' is simply put - all about a caste census. The Congress claims a caste census "will shatter misconceptions about the state of our country and start a new conversation about rights, representation and accountability..." The INC website argues that "most of the poor of the country are Dalits, Adivasis and the backward classes...they do not receive their due share and rights."

So, why a caste census? The Congress says during the caste census, the government "counts every person in the country, visits every household, gets to know your economic condition, education, and the caste you belong to."

Once the census is conducted government policies will be framed accordingly. It will see   a "Yuva Nyay" , which focuses mainly on creating "30 lakh central government jobs," "one year apprenticeship for educated youths at Rs one lakh a year," and "Rs 5000 crore start-up fund."

A   "Kisan Nyay" will focus on the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendation on Minimum Support Price(MSP), "guaranteed insurance payments within 30 days for crop loss," "no more GST on inputs for farming" and a stable import export policy to benefit farmers.

With the percentage of women in the vote bank swelling,  both the BJP and Congress have zeroed in on this influential demographic.  Sops for women are literally raining. The Congress'  "Naari Nyay" promises "Rs one lakh a year for one woman in every poor family," "50% job reservation for women in central government", "double the number of hostels for working women" among other incentives.

Under the "Shramik Nyay" the Congress promises "Employment Guarantee act in urban areas," "National Minimum Wage of Rs 400 a day which will also include MGNREGA workers," "Right to Health law" and "stopping contractualisation of employment in core government sectors" among others.

The Congress president, Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that "each and every section of the society is angry and disappointed  with the government. Each and every section has found a place in the  Congress pillars of justice."

As the Congress gets ready to challenge the might of the saffron forces with its pillars of justice, the ruling dispensation, armed with the arsenal of cultural nationalism and majoritarian agenda, has  already stepped up its offensive.
