In a case that explode in the BJP's face, former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was left red-faced with embarrasment a day before elections are set to be announced, after a woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the veteran BJP leader on Friday accusing him of sexual assault of her minor daughter.
In the police complaint filed at Sadashivnagar Police station in Bengaluru, the woman has stated that the alleged incident took place during the first week of last month when she, along with her 17 year old daughter, had gone to meet the BJP leader at his residence in Bengaluru. At that time, she alleges, that Yediyurappa 'misbehaved' with her daughter. She has sought suitable action against the former chief minister.
Yediyurappa was quick to respond, telling reporters it was " a deep-rooted conspiracy" to malign his image when crucial parliamentary polls are fast approaching.
"Prima facie it looks suspicious. The police will investigate the case and find out the truth", said Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi who added however that he suspected there was a conspiracy behind this case and that the truth would come out after the investigation . "The law must take its own course," he said.
Karnataka Home Minister Dr G. Parmeshwar was equally cautious, while confirming the complaint had been filed at the Sadashivnagar Police station against Yediyurappa and said the police would investigate the case from all angles. "Till the probe is over it's not appropriate on my part to comment," he said.
But the surfacing of this case, a day before the announcement of the dates for the Lok Sabha polls has led many to point fingers at the ruling Congress Party as well as his rivals within the BJP, who they believe are attempting to tarnish his image, given that he is the sole leader of the electorally powerful Lingayats/Veerashaivas community.
Disgruntled elements within the BJP could be behind the move as they are reportedly angry with him for denying tickets to several aspirants including former minister K.S.Eshwarappa's son, as well as Jagadish Shettar, Nalin Kumar Kateel and Pratap Simha in the first list of the candidates for 20 Lok Sabha constituencies. The complainant's naming of Yediyurappa could prove a huge embarrassment for the saffron party.
Others believe that there is an unseen Congress Party hand behind this case against the BJP stalwart, who while having retired from electoral politics and is grooming his sons to take over, did sway the Lingayat vote away from the BJP when he launched his own Karnataka Janata Party, which led to the BJP losing the previous assembly polls.
The sexual assault case does raise questions on why the complainant kept silent all these days and chosen to file a police complaint only now. "If she was witness to what happened to her daughter in front of her eyes, its unlikely she, as a mother would have kept silent", sources within Yediyurappa's circle, said, adding that Yediyurappa's home was always crowded with people.
The same woman, interestingly, is reported to have filed cases against several IPS officers including ADGP Alok Kumar, retired police commissioner Bhaskar Rao, and also against several bureaucrats.
BSY meanwhile told the press what had happened, saying how a woman and her daughter had come to his residence and poured out their woes.
“Out of concern, I gave them a patient hearing and spoke to Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B.Dayanand to address her problem. I gave her money out of compassion. After sometime she started speaking nonsense and shouted at me. I immediately called the police and handed over them for further investigation. She was acting quite strangely. Then I came to know it was very dangerous to help strangers. This morning, I came to know that she has filed a FIR against me. It's okay. Let the police Investigate the matter. I will fully co-operate with the police".
