As a kid, when I saw the sky on a clear night, I noticed the million stars that filled up the horizon. But I never noticed the vast emptiness of the night sky dotted by those stars.
Very recently, I learnt that all the physical matter put together is just 4% of the entire universe. What comprised the rest? Modern science is still trying to figure out!
Yogic sciences explain this as four dimensions:
1. Sthula: Gross matter: All the physical matter that you can touch and feel.
2. Sukshma: Subtle matter: That which is still physical, but cannot be touched or felt. It can only be perceived. Like sound or thought. Subtle, but still physical.
3. Shoonya: That dimension, which has transcended gross and subtle matter, with heightened states of perception or awareness. For example, pure energy.
4. Shiva: Shi-va: That which is not: That dimension, which has transcended all physicality. PURE CONSCIOUSNESS.
The entire science of Yoga is to take the aspirant from Sthula to Sukshma to Shoonya to Shiva, by increasing awareness.
Sometimes, it makes me wonder. Even if we know everything material there is to know in the universe, we will still know only 4%! And we are in a rat race to conquer it! What colossal ignorance!
The following invocation says it best!
Asatoma Sadgamaya
(May we go from Ignorance to Truth)
Tamasaoma Jyotirgamaya
(May we go from Darkness to Light)
Mrityorma Amritamgamaya
(May we move from Impermanence to Permanence)
Om! Shanti! Shanti! Shantihi!
