The first few chapters of the Bhagavat Purana explain 'The making of the Bhagavat Purana'. It is fascinating & illuminating. Here goes!
When 'Creation' was 'created', the first 'Purusha' was Karanodakasayi Vishnu. From him, multiple universes sprung up. The Purusha entered all the multiverses as Garbhodakasayi Vishnu, who lies in each universe in an ocean of water emanating from his own body.
From the navel of each Garbhodakasayi Vishnu in each universe, a stem of a lotus flower emerged. Within it, 14 Lokas were formed, with Bhu Loka being in the middle & the topmost being Satya Loka, the birthplace of Brahma, the father of all living beings. So, each universe has a Brahma.
Within each universe, Garbodhakasayi Vishnu expands to become Kshirodakasayi Vishu, the collective Paramatma of all living beings in that universe. From Kshirodakasayi Vishnu manifest multiple avatars. The 17th avatar was Sri Vyasadeva!
From the Brahma of each universe were born Manus. Manu is the father of 'man', 'manushya' or 'human'! Apparently, 504,000 Manus are created & annihilated in one Brahma's lifetime.
Wow! Complex & deep, isn't it?
Now, to begin with, there was only one Veda - Yajur Veda - the fountainhead of all knowledge in this universe. However, Vyasadeva divided it into four, anticipating the imminent Kali Yuga, where Man will not be able to grasp the original one. He then instructed Rishis Paila, Jaimini, Vaisampayana & Angira to propagate the Rg, Sama, Yajur & Atharva Vedas respectively.
He then composed the Brahma Sutra & Mahabharata and entrusted Romaharshana Rishi to take them forward.
But he was still unsettled in his heart. He knew something was missing!
He realized that the majority of people in Kali Yuga will not be able to grasp the intellectual nuances of the Karma Kandas & Jnana Kandas of the Vedas & Upanishads. How to inspire them towards the essence of Vedas?
That's when Rishi Narada came to Vyasadeva and pointed out what was really missing in the already phenomenal work done so far - Bhakti! He inspired Vyasadeva to compose a work that would contain the essence of the Vedas, in a manner that did not require the intellectual rigor of Vedas, but would have the same impact as practice of Vedas.
Hence was born the Bhagavat Purana, the crown jewel of all of Veda Vyasa muni's works, the greatest scientific work available on the nature of creation, composed by a mind that has surrendered in devotion to the one & only - Krishna!
